The Curia of Hungary (supreme court of Hungary) has reversed the decision of the Metropolitan Election Committee, and validated the initiative to hold a referendum in the capital on the organization of an Olympic Games in Budapest. The body examined the issue after the Metropolitan Election Committee (FVB) had rejected it, Világgazdaság writes.
The Curia has reversed the decision of the Metropolitan Election Committee No. 260/2024, and certifies the question proposed by the applicant for a local referendum at the metropolitan level:
Do you agree that the Municipality of Budapest should submit a bid for the organization of the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games?
Earlier, Világgazdaság reported that Mayor Gergely Karácsony underlined that Budapest should examine what hosting the Olympics would mean for it. He stressed that a decision on whether the capital should bid for the Olympics should be made by autumn 2025,
and that the sporting event could be held in 2036 or 2040, or even in 2044.
One thing is certain, Budapest is aiming for the next European Summer Olympic Games. The Mayor noted that he would ideally like to see a referendum in Budapest be held beforehand. He also added that even a national referendum could be considered.
In September, the Metropolitan Election Committee rejected an initiative to hold a referendum in the capital on the organization of an Olympic Games in Budapest. After the meeting, János Fazekas, chairman of the Committee, told Telex that the issue of the Budapest Olympics is a complex process, and one that the capital cannot even bid for on its own.
As Hungary Today reported, news broke in September that Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., Vice President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), expressed confidence that Budapest and Hungary could “certainly” host the Summer Games in 2036, or later. He stated that bidding for the Olympics is a complex task requiring a strong application, an experienced team, and a bit of luck. He described Hungary as “one of the most important countries in terms of world sport,” emphasizing its capacity to host major events.
