Travel agency The Thinking Traveller has analyzed millions of posts on Instagram to identify the 15 European castles that are the most popular on the platform. Buda Castle got an excellent place on the list, ahead of the Palace of Versailles.
The agency looked at how much users actually posted about the castles based on posts on Instagram and hashtags referring to the locations.
Buda Castle (#budacastle) came in eighth on the list, among competitors such as Windsor Castle in England and Mont Saint-Michel in France. The excellent spot is also big news because the Hungarian site beat out the Palace of Versailles, which finished just behind it in 9th place. According to data from The Thinking Traveller, the hashtag #budacastle was used 205,807 times during the examined period.
The Tower of London took first place, with its hashtag occurring 647,112 times on Instagram. Edinburgh Castle came in second, just a hair behind the Tower of London, with 646,244 hashtags, and Mont Saint-Michel came in third with 596,062 hashtags.
Buda Castle is home to the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Located in the heart of Budapest, the castle has served as the palace of Hungarian kings since the 13th century, and was remodeled in the 19th century according to the designs of Miklós Ybl and Alajos Hauszmann. The castle is a part of the Budapest World Heritage Site, declared in 1987, and is undergoing a development in the framework of the “National Hauszmann Program” to revitalize and restore the castle during the period of 2019−2030.
Both the Prime Minister and the President’s offices are located in the Buda Castle. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is residing in the Carmelite Monastery, while President Katalin Novák has her office in Sándor Palace.
