Border Guards Called ‘Irreplaceable’ amid Migration Policy Divide

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.05.28.

Thanking the police officers departing for foreign service, State Secretary Bence Rétvári emphasized that Hungarian police officers and border guards have been setting an example for ten years in the fight against illegal migration.

Bence Rétvári pointed out that the United States, similar to Hungary’s border protection, has established stricter border controls, and since the start of Donald Trump’s presidency, 152,000 people have been deported from the country.

The United States is more successful in deportation than the European Union, he noted, adding that in the latter, eight to nine out of 10 deportation attempts are unsuccessful.

This is why border protection is important and why the work you do is irreplaceable,”

stated the State Secretary, adding that external border protection is the only sure way to preserve the security of the European and Hungarian people.

Rétvári pointed out that the new German Government has also introduced border controls at Germany’s external borders. “This is nothing more than what we Hungarians have been doing for ten years,” he argued.

The difference is that while German border protection is accepted by EU leaders, who view it with understanding, Hungary is fined one million euros every day, the State Secretary added.
