Speaking to journalists ahead of the Civic Evening forum, Minister of Justice Bence Tuzson said that the protection of sovereignty is one of the most important issues in the European Union today, but the Hungarian government is witnessing efforts to turn the community of nation-states into a “Brussels-led empire.”
He said that “Brussels wants to force decisions down the throats of nation-states, such as those related to migration, which bypass traditional forms of decision-making and consensus, and thus hinder European countries in representing their own interests.”
Referring to the crisis regulation approved by the European Union, Bence Tuzson explained the following:
a decision had been made to oblige European countries to take in illegal immigrants, and that if a country fails to do so, it would have to pay a penalty. We consider this unacceptable and we will do our utmost to preserve our sovereignty.”
The minister stressed that the Hungarian government would resist any attempt to impose its will, including the rule of law. Tuzson made it clear that the cabinet is willing to engage in any dialogue, and if good compromise proposals are going to be made, they will be accepted, provided that these do not run counter to Hungarian national interest.
“We will never accept any decision against the national interest, we will always stand up for the Hungarian national interest,” the Minister said, adding that Brussels can expect this from the Ministry of Justice and the Hungarian government in the future.
