Belling of Red Deer up Close: a Special Listening Tour in Gemenc

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.27.

The belling of red deer (Cervus elaphus) stags has started in the forest of Gemenc (unique forest between Szekszárd and Baja, southern Hungary). Gemenc Zrt. is organizing weekend hikes to the best and loudest forest areas to listen to the belling of red deer stags, the forest management company announced.

They wrote in a statement that during the next three weekends, on Fridays and Saturdays – the first time on August 30 – interested parties can participate in the tours guided by trained professionals, where the special belling can be heard without disturbing the wildlife.

The tours will be preceded by an educational program where the experts will give a hands-on demonstration of the phenomenon of belling, which is part of the complex social and communication system of the red deer.

From 5 p.m., the adventurous will be treated to a demonstration of the antler and bugle. They will learn what a specialist can read from shed antlers, how many different types of belling sounds can be heard in the forest, and how the antlers are used by the deer. Some of the most interesting shed antlers collected in recent years will also be on display.

The interactive exhibition “Legend and Reality – The Red Deer of Gemenc” will be followed by a guided tour from the Ecotourism Center in Pörböly (southern Hungary) at 6.30 p.m. each evening. The groups will take a minibus to the “loudest” part of the Gemenc Forest, where they will experience the special atmosphere of the area, where the belling of the deer are the most audible sounds of the forest.

It was noted that the organizing company does not usually recommend children to participate, as the several-hour tours are only effective if visitors are quietly listening throughout.

However, on one occasion, on September 14, a special program for children will be held at a stop on the forest railway in Lassi, where craft activities will be offered for children who get bored of listening in silence.

The organizers have pointed out that the tours are by appointment only. For further details and registration information, please visit the Gemenc Ecotourism Center (Ökoturisztikai Központ Gemenc) Facebook page.
