This weekend, Beijing will host the next tournament of the Teqball World Series, marking the largest prize money event of the year, reports Index.
Teqball, a sport developed in Hungary by Gábor Borsányi, Viktor Huszár, and György Gattyán just a decade ago, has gained immense popularity, with millions of followers globally. The tournament in Beijing reflects the sport’s growth, which has expanded beyond Europe to the Far East, exemplified by the opening of the world’s first Teqball Research Center in Beijing.
Béla Müller, FITEQ’s (International Teqball Federation) Head of Communications, noted that the sport’s evolution is evident in the increasing number of host cities and participants.
While teqball was European-centric for the first ten years, the focus is shifting to the Far East,” he stated.
This shift is significant, as Beijing’s event follows a record-breaking World Championship in Bangkok and leads into another in Vietnam later this year.
The tournament will feature competitions in men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles, set against the backdrop of the iconic Olympic Park. In light of recent weather challenges, the event will begin with knockout stages rather than group matches.
In conjunction with the tournament, the International Teqball Research Center was inaugurated at the Budapest University of Physical Education and Sport.
Gábor Borsányi emphasized the importance of this development, stating that China has become a vital center for the Teqball family. László Vajda, Secretary General of the association, highlighted that this partnership will facilitate scientific approaches to analyzing and advancing the sport, reinforcing its Hungarian roots while fostering international collaboration.
