Hungarian football is almost experiencing a resurgence, according to Zsolt Lőw, assistant coach of German champions Bayern Munich.
“As far as I can judge from such a distance, what has happened in Hungarian football in recent years, both at the managerial level and at the level of organization, can only be spoken of at the highest level,” Lőw told MTI and Kossuth Radio. He added that he believes
the way Hungarian football and its management has been transformed, the reforms that have been made, and the importance of the sport in the country has grown even more, the stadium that has been built and the way it is filled with fans for every match is exemplary.
“What the Hungarian fans are doing in Puskás Arena is amazing and of international standard,” he highlighted.
The 44-year-old professional stressed that the atmosphere created by the Hungarian fans abroad at the European Championships is also special. He believes that the way the professional staff are working and getting the most out of the national team is also great, as is the team that has been formed over the past few years.
Bayern Munich’s head coach Thomas Tuchel was banned from Bayern’s first Champions League match of 2023-24 against Manchester United, as a punishment for getting sent off in his side’s last match in the competition against Manchester City. This was a special opportunity for Lőw as
Tuchel’s suspension meant that he managed the club in the group stage of the UCL on September 20, where they secured a 4-3 victory against Manchester United.
He recalled that it was a great experience to lead the team in a UCL match. “It was a defining moment of my career, especially against a club as big as Manchester United.”
He revealed that his ambition is to one day take up a job as a head coach, and the game against Manchester United really helped to give him the desire to do so even more. He has had plenty of opportunities in recent years, with several approaches from big teams in serious leagues, but he did not feel the time was right. “I cannot say if I will ever feel like that but I am definitely thinking about it,” he added.
As Zsolt Lőw pointed out, this is not just a sporting decision, as a head coach has more pressure, responsibility and stress, and has to spend more time with the team and around the team than an assistant coach. He believes that continuing as a head coach would be at the expense of his family, but if he did decide to continue, his family would support him.
“Professionally, I think I could do the job. I have to decide whether to sacrifice my private life and family life even more,” concluded Lőw.
