Christian Hafenecker, Secretary General of the Austrian Freedom Party, and Harald Vilimsky, Head of the Austrian Freedom Party’s Delegation to the European Parliament, received the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit, Civil Division, on Monday in Budapest at the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Our Austrian friends have done a lot for Hungarian-Austrian friendship and for the strengthening of the representatives of normality in Europe”, remarked Gergely Gulyás, Minister for the Prime Minister’s Office, who presented the two Austrian politicians with their honors.

Both Hafenecker and Vilimsky are members of Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ), that is currently in talks to form the country’s next government. The FPÖ is also a member of the Patriots for Europe alliance in the European Parliament, alongside the Hungarian government party, FIDESZ.

In a recent interview for Hungary Today, Mr. Hafenecker told us that in terms of Hungarian-Austrian neighborly relations “the aim is to learn from each other. In the case of Hungary, this would mean adopting successful policies, for example in the area of family, the fight against “woke madness” and LGBTQ propaganda, or in dealing with NGOs financed from abroad. Bilateral committees, regular visits, and exchanges on a diplomatic, cultural, political, and economic level – all of these areas would lend themselves to building even closer relations”.
