For months already, sports newspapers have been reporting that not only FC Chelsea but also several other big clubs have been strongly inquiring about the Hungarian footballer, Attila Szalai, and Roman Abramovich seems to have won the “bidding war,” reports Hungarian news site, Index.

With a purchase price of €23.4 million, Attila Szalai would be the most expensive Hungarian footballer ever acquired, surpassing the recent record of Dominik Szoboszlai (22 million euros).

Several Chelsea players’ contracts expire at the end of the season, namely those of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva, and César Azpilicueta and it is reported that negotiations on contract extensions with them are not going well. Since all four of them are defenders, the club is in a delicate situation, so finding replacements has become a priority.

Attila Szalai moved from Apollon Limassol for only €2 million in January this year, where he made 40 appearances and scored three goals in addition to his excellent defensive work.
