Artificial Intelligence to Play a Key Role in the Defense Industry

Hungary Today 2025.03.17.

Artificial intelligence in the defense industry – new university-research institute projects could benefit from favorable domestic conditions, the Ministry of Energy announced on Facebook. They also reported that László Palkovics, government commissioner for the development of artificial intelligence, and Paul Walf, CEO of Rheinmetall Hungary, met to review the opportunities for cooperation in the sector.

The defense industry is one of Hungary’s most dynamically developing new industries, and the government started to modernize it long before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. According to the parties’ assessment of the situation, the European, and in particular German, intentions to invest hundreds of billions of euros in defense procurement will shed new light on Hungarian capacities. By exploiting them and meeting the requirements for higher volume, more intensive work and greater efficiency, the national income can be increased and the economy strengthened, the ministry pointed out in their statement.

AI applications will contribute greatly to improving the efficiency of manufacturing and the higher functionality of technologies used in warfare equipment.

Hungary has all the tools to do this: modern factories, significant and expanding research, development and innovation capacity, and a broadening supplier base.

At the meeting, the parties agreed to make intensive use of the capacities of Hungarian universities and research institutes in the field of AI applications in the future, including the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the University of Pannonia, and the HUN-REN Institute for Computer Science and Control, which are also looking forward to new AI projects.

Former Minister László Palkovics was recently appointed government commissioner for the development of artificial intelligence. In an interview with Világgazdaság, he said that the development of the field could help attract foreign capital and even help the establishment of an artificial intelligence research center in Hungary.

There are many different and numerous opportunities for Hungary in the field of AI, for example in education, science, economics, or research. It would be foolish to let these opportunities go unexploited.

“And if we do not act, we should be under no illusions: someone else will do it instead,” he emphasized.
