Armand Duplantis

Swedish-American pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, who jumped a new world record on Tuesday at the Gyulai István Memorial, will be the face of the World Athletics Final, debuting in Budapest next September, the World Athletics Federation (WA) announced.

The new biennial competition will bring together the world’s best athletes to determine the “champion of champions.” The first competition will be held in Budapest from September 11 to 13, 2026. Jon Ridgeon, CEO of the World Athletics, emphasized that in even-numbered years, when there are no world championships, there was a need for a prestigious, multi-day event.

World-class pole vaulter Duplantis broke the record for the 13th time with a new mark of 6.29 meters. The athlete said that Budapest is a special venue and that his goal is to break the record again in front of a full house next year.

“It is an honor to be the first Ultimate Star of the first World Final,” said Duplantis.

I have wonderful memories of winning gold at the World Championships in Budapest, and it would be a dream come true to break the world record again in front of a sold-out crowd next year.”

The organizers have announced 26 participants so far, including the gold medalists of the World Championships in Tokyo and the Diamond League winners. The official website in Hungarian and English was launched on Wednesday.
