Another Romanian Party with Hungarophobic Rhetoric Joins the European Parliament

Following the inclusion of six members of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, S.O.S. Romania, led by Diana Şoşoacă, is joining a new group, initiated by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), with two of its members, reports Maszol.ro.

After becoming an unwelcome member of the Identity and Democracy (ID) group in the European Parliament, the far-right AfD is creating a new group with several small European parties under the name “The Sovereignists.” In its report, Euronews recalls that the AfD was expelled from the ID group before the EP elections. The move was initiated by Marine Le Pen’s National Rally after the leader of the German opposition party said in an interview with an Italian newspaper that she did not think that everyone who wore the uniform of the Waffen SS in the Nazi Germany was by default a criminal.

Maszol.ro has learned that the new parliamentary faction could potentially include S.O.S. Romania, led by Diana Şoşoacă.

As the portal reports, Diana Şoşoacă said in a TV interview on Sunday evening that she and Luis Lazarus, the party’s second MEP, had been in talks with the AfD for a year. She also noted that one of the obstacles to the formation of the new group was Hungarian-Romanian disputes, which is why, she said,

in the spirit of peace and friendship, she offered a friendly hand to the Hungarian far-right MEP – member of Our Homeland Movement (Mi Hazánk Mozgalom) – who is seeking to join the group.

As Hungary Today reported, last week the ultranationalist AUR MEPs who won seats in the European Parliament elections joined the ECR Group. Last Wednesday, the ECR, led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, unanimously approved the AUR MEPs Cristian Terheş, Claudiu Târziu, Gheorghe Piperea, Adrian Axinia, Georgiana Teodorescu and Sturdza Şerban Dimitrie to join the group.

Botond Csoma, spokesman for the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), told Magyar Nemzet that the ECR decision was regrettable. The RMDSZ MEP also called the decision wrong because Georgia Meloni and her party alliance knew the party was led by George Simion.

I do not know what criteria they took into account when they made this decision, but it was a wrong one. As representatives of the Hungarian community in Transylvania, we cannot agree with this decision,”

said Botond Csoma.

As to whether Fidesz, the Hungarian government party, wants to join the ECR, Viktor Orbán made it clear following his meeting with Giorgia Meloni on Monday. As he said, they are not willing to join a party alliance that includes an anti-Hungarian party. “There is nothing to negotiate about, we cannot sit in such a faction,” he underlined.
