Another Hungarian Student to Reach the North Pole in International Expedition

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.04.30.

Rosatom will once again organize an international expedition to the North Pole called “Icebreaker of Knowledge” this year, and Hungarian students will once again be among the participants, the Russian nuclear energy company told MTI on Monday.

Rosatom is launching the expedition for the sixth time this year, marking the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear power industry and the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Northern Sea Route, organized by the Network of Nuclear Power Information Centers.

The project aims to promote natural sciences and nuclear industry technologies, identify and support talented children, develop their skills, and help them choose a career path.

Students aged 14-16 from all over the world can win boarding passes for the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy (50 Years of Victory) bound for the North Pole, based on their results in a competition on the goarctic.energy website.

Rosatom is waiting for applications from students in its 20 partner countries (Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, South Africa, Belarus, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Hungary, Myanmar, Mongolia, Namibia, Armenia, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam). The selection process will take place in three stages and will end on June 20.

Fact

Last year, the expedition set off on August 13, with Hungarian student Levente Varga on board. The public could follow the young boy’s adventures on his social media page. The project’s Arctic expedition was internationalized in 2024, to mark the 65th anniversary of the Russian nuclear icebreaker fleet. Russia is the only country in the world with a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers. The infrastructure for the North Sea shipping route has been operated and developed by Rosatom since 2018, and is one of the company’s priority areas of activity.
