The Visegrád Four (V4) should not be broken up, because it has worked very well, former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said in a podcast entitled The Bold Truth About Hungary.
Speaking to Zoltán Kovács, Hungarian State Secretary for International Communications and Relations, Andrej Babis recalled that he founded an anti-corruption movement in 2011, because “corruption had reached terrible proportions in the Czech Republic.” The core of his party’s ideology and strategy is to do politics to make life better for all Czech citizens, he explained. He added that they had won several elections, but lost the last one because all the parties had joined forces against them.
“This whole conflict of interests was invented in Europe,” he said, adding that it was like when Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, “told the Italians before the elections that if you voted for Giorgia Meloni you would not get any money,” or what they did to Viktor Orbán, him or former Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa.”
Babis said that “they want to decide” who wins the elections and who is in government. “These people in the Commission” seem to want to destroy Europe, which “is a serious danger for all of us,” he said. He added that this is why next year’s European Parliament (EP) elections are important.
On the EP elections, Babis stated that
people needed to be persuaded to go out and vote, because the last time, turnout was only 28 percent.
They also need to be told that the future of Europe is very important for the future of Czech citizens, he said. “The European Council is controlled by the Commission, but it should be the other way around: the Council should control the Commission,” the politician added.
Babis also said that he was proud to be a populist, because populism means fighting for the wishes of those who disagree with the government.
According to the politician, the current Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, “secretly admires Viktor Orbán because he has written a fantastic book about conservatives.” But Fiala’s coalition partner, the Pirates and other parties, do not want him to come and meet the Hungarian Prime Minister, he said.
Babis also emphasized in the podcast that during his premiership, the Visegrád Group (V4) had achieved a lot and had a lot of influence. The V4 has worked very well, but is over now because “the current Czech government is against everything I supported, and I supported the V4,” he said. He added that Poland has now also changed its strategy, and “wants to be a kind of nuclear power,” and is taking a very active role in the war in Ukraine. But we should not break up the V4 because of that, because it worked very well, Babis stressed.
