The Mátranovák (northern Hungary) site in Hungary is set to significantly enhance Alstom’s global bogie manufacturing capacity, with plans to produce a third of this capacity within a few years, according to Gáspár Balázs, CEO of Alstom’s Hungarian operations.

Speaking at the Hungarian Railways 2024 conference, Mr. Balázs announced that the site would manufacture 1,600 bogie frames this year, utilizing nearly one million man-hours. He noted, “the factory’s production capacity will be increased by 40 percent as a result of the HUF 6B (EUR 15.6M) development program nearing completion.”

The ongoing development at the plant has led to the hiring of 163 new employees, raising the total workforce to 720.

This expansion includes a significant wage increase and initiatives aimed at boosting employee engagement. Alstom has operated in Hungary for over 20 years and has a strong local presence, having built half of Budapest’s metro trains and contributed to modernizing the MÁV-Start train fleet.

The Mátranovák plant, which has been producing bogie frames for nearly 40 years, supplies products for various trains, including conventional, high-speed, and suburban models across Europe. The site is also responsible for manufacturing bogies for MÁV (Hungarian State Railways), MÁV-HÉV (MÁV’s suburban branch), and BKV (Budapest Public Transit Company).

The company’s Hungarian subsidiary, Alstom Hungary Ltd., reported a revenue increase from over EUR 40M in 2022 to more than EUR 48.4M in 2023, reflecting robust growth in the Hungarian market.
