Alice Weidel Calls Viktor Orbán “the True Beacon of Freedom”

Hungary Today 2025.05.30.

Alice Weidel, co-chair of Germany’s largest opposition party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), made headlines on the second day of the CPAC Hungary conference in Budapest on Friday when she described Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as “the true beacon of freedom.”

The German politician used her speech to acknowledge the message of “freedom-loving German patriots” to the Hungarian capital, and to position the AfD as the “second strongest political force” and “the only patriotic force” in Germany. She even described her party as the next ruling party.

Alice Weidel emphasized in her speech that

the German media and the political establishment are afraid of the AfD – and with good reason.

She explained that anger is growing among many German voters because of lies and the deterioration of their living conditions, which the politician attributed to migration, crime, and rising energy prices, among other things. She sharply criticized the German federal government for “leaving the borders open and supporting migration,” while at the same time “throwing German taxpayers’ money out the window for the Ukrainians.”

The AfD politician also attacked CDU chairman Friedrich Merz, accusing him of winning the elections by copying the AfD’s program and then selling his soul to the left in order to become chancellor. Weidel also criticized what she claimed was manipulation of the constitution and the stripping of parliamentary rights from the opposition.

She spoke of a “war against free speech” through “hate speech” and disinformation.

The German politician expressed particular concern about the role of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV). She claimed that it protects those in power and spies on the opposition in order to brand the AfD as anti-constitutional and exclude it from parliament.

However, Weidel said that the plan to ban the strongest opposition party would fail. All this was merely a means of retaining power and an expression of the panic of the “anti-patriotic woke system” that was trampling democracy underfoot. She warned that over 10 million voters would be denied representation in parliament and emphasized that the voice of the people is the foundation of democracy, and that there is no place for “firewalls.”

Despite this grim analysis, Weidel remained optimistic:

Today, however, the wind of change is blowing stronger in Europe and throughout the Western world. The future belongs to free, patriotic citizens and sovereign nations.

She once again thanked Viktor Orbán for inviting her to the conference and ended her speech by calling on patriots to defend freedom of expression, secure borders, rights, the future of children, sovereign nations, free citizens, and peace. She also emphasized good relations with neighbors and the U.S. She concluded her speech with the words: “Let’s make Europe great again together!”

The audience responded to the remarks of the AfD co-chair at the end of her speech with a standing ovation.
