Ukraine War: President Áder Praises Hungarian National Cohesion

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.03.02.

President János Áder on Wednesday praised Hungarians’ readiness to help and the “national cohesion” in the country, which has prompted supplying aid to people in need now because of the war in Ukraine but also during the coronavirus pandemic and natural disasters.

Áder told public broadcaster Kossuth Radio that “the tradition of national cohesion runs deep in Hungary, within the country as well as across the borders”. “We can be proud of that”, he said.

Referring to aid provided for refugees coming from Ukraine, Áder asked Hungarians to rely on “tried and trusted” aid organizations to make sure help reaches those in need.

Áder said the first couple had offered one million forints (EUR 2,700) in aid to help refugees.

Aid to refugees and to Ukraine flows mostly through large charity organisations, coordinated by the National Humanitarian Coordination Council (NHKT), he said. He thanked law enforcement agencies and local authorities for their work, as well as state-owned railway company MÁV which has transported 10,000 people inland from the border free of charge, and private donors such as the Béres Foundation which has offered medicine worth 20 million forints.

Áder also asked Hungarians to remain calm and to use reliable sources of information.
