Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met at the invitation of Weltwoche in Vienna to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on Europe, reports Index. Under the title “The War in Ukraine is Lost,” Mr. Schröder called for Germany and France to follow Mr. Orbán’s example and actively work for peace.
Viktor Orbán, who also gave interviews to the Austrian press and signed a joint declaration with Herbert Kickl, the leader of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), emphasized Hungary’s responsibility as part of the Christian-democratic world. The discussion, moderated by Roger Köppel, editor-in-chief of Weltwoche, highlighted PM Orbán’s recent peace mission, during which he sought European support for a peaceful resolution.
We have the means; we are the presidents (of the Council of the European Union – ed.) – what could be more important than doing something for peace?” Viktor Orbán stated.
He reported difficulties in convincing both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire, as both believed “the time is on their side.” This deadlock prompted him to focus on creating international public opinion to pressure the warring parties toward a peaceful solution.
The Hungarian Prime Minister traveled to Washington, Beijing, and Mar-a-Lago to meet with former President Donald Trump, who said of Viktor Orbán, “he is a man of peace; if he wins, we can count on him.”
However, Mr. Orbán expressed frustration that European leaders rejected his proposal for a peace camp with China and Turkey.
He lamented that it is “a very sad story” that Europe, despite its proximity to the conflict, has not grasped the urgency of peace, criticizing the lack of communication with Russia as “diplomatic barbarism.”
Gerhard Schröder agreed with Viktor Orbán, emphasizing that European powers must take the lead on peace initiatives. “Without a strong initiative from France or Germany, it will be difficult to implement a viable peace plan,” he said. Mr. Orbán warned that if Donald Trump wins the election, he will negotiate with Putin, leaving Europe out:
the Americans will not negotiate in a complicated, intellectual way through history but in the language of force: greatness, power… There will be realpolitik there.”
Egy sűrű nap Bécsben. Interjú-dömping és előadás Gerhard Schröderrel.
A magyar elnökség legnagyobb eredménye: már Európában is mindenhol a béke a téma!

The Hungarian PM expressed his belief that “Europe cannot find its own leadership at the moment; it is a leadership problem,” while the U.S., China, and Russia have stable leadership structures. He noted, “I can see that the traditional structure of European politics is disappearing,” pointing out that new issues like war and migration do not align with the traditional left-right divide. Mr. Orbán called for rapid change, especially in Germany and France, where political leaders must represent the emerging new center.
The Hungarian Prime Minister’s statement resonated with Chancellor Schröder,as he stated:
it is precisely the major European powers that have a duty to follow Viktor Orbán.”
In their joint declaration on preserving European diversity and returning power to national parliaments, Viktor Orbán and Herbert Kickl of Freedom Party of Austria identified illegal migration as a significant threat to European culture and advocated for peace negotiations.
They reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring peace, freedom, security, and prosperity for all citizens, aligning with their vision of the EU as a peace project.
The discussion between Mr. Orbán and Mr. Schröder highlights a critical moment for Europe as it navigates the complexities of war and diplomacy.
