Donald Tusk Is Trampling on Polish Constitutionality, Says Fidesz MEP

Hungary Today 2023.12.22.

“What we are seeing is open violence, intimidation, and a clear attempt to trample on the public and freedom of expression and to silence any dissent,” Balázs Hidvéghi told Magyar Nemzet. The paper asked the Fidesz MEP about the repression of the Polish public media by Donald Tusk’s government.

This week, Donald Tusk and his new government dismissed the CEOs of public television, radio, and the state news agency PAP, and set up new supervisory boards in the public media. The move has sparked outrage from Law and Justice (PiS), which has ruled Poland for two terms, with Polish President Andrzej Duda calling the move a “clear violation of the constitution.” Police were even called to the headquarters of Polish public media to enforce the Tusk government’s decision.

“What is going on in Poland is horrifying, the new liberal government of Donald Tusk is trampling underfoot the Polish constitutionality and the laws in force,” Balázs Hidvéghi, Fidesz MEP, pointed out. “All this shows what left-liberal politics has become today,” he said. He added that this is unacceptable in a democratic constitutional state, it goes against all written and unwritten rules, and no election victory gives any mandate for such practices.

It is particularly interesting that this is being done by a coalition that in recent years has constantly attacked the PiS government and Hungary on the grounds of the rule of law,”

the MEP stressed.

One of the key points of Donald Tusk’s campaign was that if elected, EU funds withheld on rule of law concerns would be released. What Brussels will do in response to this unprecedented, almost dictatorial decision remains a mystery, as there has been no reaction so far, writes the paper.

“Given the extent of double standards and political cynicism in Brussels, it is in some ways not surprising that no one has spoken out,” the politician pointed out. “Because the politicians they like have come to power,” he continued, “those who dance to Brussels’ tune, they are now silent.” Hidvéghi added that this is not the only recent case where serious concerns about the rule of law have been raised, but Brussels is taking no action. A similar silence was observed when Spanish leftist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez offered Catalan pro-independence politicians unconstitutional amnesty in exchange for power.

Viktor Orbán also spoke out on the matter, answering a question from the press, saying that

if this had happened in Hungary, NATO troops would have been mobilized.”

“This is not an exaggeration. They have been attacking Hungary in the most extreme way for years, but when such a blatant violation occurs, they do not speak out,” Hidvéghi said, commenting on the prime minister’s comments. The politician added that if Brussels does not take any action against the Polish government, it will be another blow to the European Union’s credibility, which is not very solid anyway.
