The majority of young Hungarians foresee having their own home, marriage, children, and life in Hungary by 2050, according to a poll conducted by the Youth Research Institute.
The Institute’s survey, conducted at the end of 2022, and the beginning of 2023, among Hungarian citizens aged 15-39, in a nationwide, representative sample of 1,000 people, asked them how they see their future in a quarter of a century, when they will belong to the 42-66 age group.
The responses show that around three quarters of 15-39 year-olds think it is likely that they will be living in their own house/apartment (76%), married (75%), or living in Hungary (72%) in 2050.
Two-thirds of respondents (68%) plan to have more than one child by 2050, and the same proportion assume that they will be better off financially than they are now, the survey showed.
The institute added that the current financial situation of respondents influenced their vision for the future. It can be seen that those who are not struggling financially today are more optimistic about their future.
Almost two thirds (64%) of 15-39 year olds are fairly confident that they will still be in a job in 2050 that is suitable for their current studies or occupation. However, respondents are evenly divided on whether they will communicate with their colleagues mostly in Hungarian or in a foreign language (45-44%).
Women are more likely to be retired in 2050, than men (39% vs. 30%), to live in Hungary (76% vs. 69%), or to own their own flat/house (79 % vs. 73 %). Men are more likely to have one or more children (70% vs. the 66 % of female respondents).
The more detailed findings of the research will be presented at the Mathias Corvinus Collegium’s Political Festival, at the Youth Research Institute’s tent. The survey will also be available on the Institute’s official website at a later date, the release concluded.
