Amarilla Veres Claims Hungary’s First Gold at Tokyo Paralympics

Hungary Today 2021.08.26.

Amarilla Veres has claimed Hungary’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics in wheelchair fencing.

The athlete won in épée category A (fencers in this category have good trunk control, whereas category B athletes have an impairment that impacts their trunk or their fencing arm).

In the gold medal bout, she beat Chinese Rong Jing (15-12), a three-time champion in the previous games, five years ago. Interestingly, the final was the second time the two have clashed, and in their first face-off back in the group stage, it was the Chinese athlete who managed to perform better.

As a matter of fact, this is the second-ever Hungarian gold in wheelchair fencing. Until now Pál Szekeres has been the only one who managed to reach this milestone.

Veres’ gold was the Hungarian team‘s second medal in Tokyo, after Zsófia Konkoly clinched a silver in 400m freestyle on Wednesday.
