Hungary has unveiled its traditional and sugar-free version of its national cake of 2025, as well as the winners of the Saint Stephen’s Day Bread competition, in a ceremony held Thursday at the Parliament building in Budapest.
The prestigious Cake of Hungary title was awarded to the DCJ Stílusgyakorlat (“Stylistic Exercise”), a chocolate, caramel, and sour cherry creation by the Kézműves Cukrászda in Gyula (southern Hungary).

Inspired by the 140th anniversary of the classic Dobos cake, the dessert reinterprets tradition with bold flavors, vertical layering, and refined textures—including sour cherry jelly, almond praline, caramelized sugar layers, and a rich chocolate buttercream.
The bottom sponge features crisp Dobos-style caramel, paying homage to the cake’s creator, József C. Dobos.
Meanwhile, the title of Hungary’s Sugar-Free Cake went to the Álmodozó (“Dreamer”) by Alfréd Kovács of Édes Vonal Cukrászda in Vác (close to Budapest). The dessert evokes classic Hungarian flavors reminiscent of the Lúdláb and Rigójancsi cakes, using a cocoa-almond sponge, cinnamon-sour cherry chia compote, and a lightly sweetened milk chocolate cream—all without added sugar. A crunchy chocolate layer with crushed cocoa nibs adds texture and complexity.
The cake competitions, organized by the Hungarian Confectioners’ Guild and the Egy Csepp Figyelem (A Drop of Attention) Foundation, encourage innovation rooted in tradition and health-conscious ingredients.
The winners of the Saint Stephen’s Day Bread contest, organized for the 14th time by the Hungarian Bakers’ Association were also celebrated. The top prize went to the Alföldi Pajta, a spelt-based bread from Balmaz Sütöde bakery in Balmazújváros (eastern Hungary). The Innovative Bread Award was claimed by Varga Pékség bakery of Mórahalom (eastern Hungary) for its extra virgin olive oil Mediterranean-style loaf. In the pastry category, the Három Tarka Macska Bakery triumphed with its cherry-sauce-filled, brownie-stuffed treat called “Augusztusi álom” (“August Dream”).
