“The Brussels–Washington Agreement is Disastrous for Europe”

The new agreement between Brussels and the United States is “disastrous for Europe,” believes the Fidesz–KDNP group in the European Parliament. The party alliance shared that the pact is further proof that the Brussels leadership, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has turned its back on the interests of European families, businesses, and citizens and is instead pursuing a pro-Ukrainian policy that serves U.S. economic interests.

Under the agreement, the U.S. will impose a 15 percent tariff on EU products, while the European Union will commit to purchasing €750 billion worth of energy resources from the U.S. In addition, European companies would make an additional €600 billion in investments in the U.S. economy.

“This is yet another betrayal by the Brussels bureaucracy,” the statement said. The party group emphasizes that the agreement does not serve to strengthen European energy independence, but rather to serve U.S. interests, and that skyrocketing energy prices will once again be paid for by European citizens and companies.

Fidesz-KDNP also finds it unacceptable that the Brussels leadership is taking on such far-reaching economic commitments on behalf of European companies without any democratic mandate, instead of strengthening their competitiveness.

The parliamentary group is particularly concerned that the agreement contains a “secret clause” on further military support for Ukraine and the financing of the war, all from European taxpayers’ money and without consulting citizens.

We demand that Brussels immediately disclose the secret clause of the agreement concerning Ukraine,”

the statement emphasizes.

Fidesz-KDNP MEPs also point out that due to Brussels’ wrong decisions, Europeans are already facing higher energy prices, declining agricultural subsidies, support for illegal migration, and hundreds of billions of euros in aid packages for Ukraine.

The party alliance emphasized that behind Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election stands the left-liberal grand coalition, as well as Weber’s European People’s Party and its Hungarian members, including Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party, which is the main opposition party in Hungary. According to the statement, these political forces “bowed down to the Brussels bureaucrats and are voting in favor of decisions that harm the interests of the European people.”

“The Tisza Party is faithfully following Brussels’ warmongering and economically self-destructive policies,” the Fidesz-KDNP statement said.

The parliamentary group reaffirmed that it would continue to stand up for peace in Europe and the interests of European families and businesses, and rejected the Brussels leadership’s efforts to “plunge the continent into war.”

“There is therefore an urgent need for a change of leadership in Brussels!”, concludes the statement by the Fidesz-KDNP group in the European Parliament.
