Zalakaros Thermal Spa Honored for Renewable Energy Excellence

Hungary Today 2025.07.30.

Zalakaros Spa (in western Hungary) has received a significant international accolade: its geothermal energy modernization project has been named one of the “Good Practices” by the Interreg Europe program, as part of the DETOCS (DEcarbonising the Tourism Industry Post Covid-19 Support) international initiative.

The recognition underscores the town’s long-term commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness — values that have now gained acknowledgement well beyond Hungary’s borders, reported turizmus.com.

The DETOCS project aims to identify tourism initiatives that successfully integrate economic, social, and environmental considerations. Its broader goal is to support spa towns in transitioning to greener operations while maintaining their competitiveness. In this context, Zalakaros’ geothermal project was selected as a model solution.

At the heart of the development is the efficient and modern use of geothermal energy.

Thanks to the upgrades, Zalakaros Spa now relies largely on renewable energy, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lowering operational costs.

The investment is not only an environmental milestone but also enhances long-term energy security and operational stability for the town. At the same time, it serves as an example for other municipalities and tourism service providers across Europe.

“We are proud that the philosophy we have followed for years — seeking a balance between economic development and respect for the natural environment — has now been recognized at the international level,” said Andor Végh, CEO of Zalakaros Spa.

Our geothermal development is not just a technological advancement; it is a commitment to future generations.

“This recognition affirms that tourism and spa services can indeed be developed in a sustainable and responsible way — while also improving the guest experience and operational efficiency,” Mr. Végh added.
