International Students Head to Pécs to Learn Hungarian

Students from over twenty countries are heading to Pécs for the Hungarian Language and Culture Summer University, which begins on Monday. The University of Pécs is organizing a course teaching Hungarian as a foreign language for the 26th time.

Participants in the two-week intensive course will come from countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mozambique, and the United States. The youngest student is 17 and the oldest is 73, making the program a unique meeting point for different cultures, age groups, and personal stories, reads a statement from the university.

The aim of the summer university is not only to teach the language, but also to introduce participants to Hungarian culture, while every day is filled with learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

Teaching is personalized at six language levels, with each group working with three teachers, many of whom were involved in developing the curriculum.

The backbone of the curriculum is the magyarOK textbook series, which follows a model-based teaching methodology that supports living language learning with grammar rules and cultural dialogue.

Classes are complemented by cultural programs, themed city walks, and gastronomic evenings, and a phonetics club helps students practice their pronunciation in a playful way.

The instructors at the Pécs Summer University view the event as a methodological workshop where they can try out new teaching techniques with motivated students. The many returning participants prove that the course is not only a place to learn a language, but also to form lifelong friendships, many returning to Pécs as a group of friends.
