Preserving the our community’s unity in Southern Slovakia is everyone’s responsibility, said Lőrinc Nacsa, State Secretary for National Policy at the Prime Minister’s Office, in the village of Gombaszög (Gombasek) on Wednesday.

The Gombaszög Summer Camp is the oldest event aiming to attract young Hungarians in the region. In his opening speech, the state secretary said that such festivals throughout the Carpathian Basin are important from a national perspective because they provide an opportunity for discussing national policy strategies, planning, exchanging ideas, and debating.

It is good when different opinions meet and we can compare different points of view. This is good as long as it leads to joint action.

Leaving this camp spiritually recharged, we must pull in the same direction, and it is very important to be able to work towards common goals,” emphasized Lőrinc Nacsa.

The state secretary pointed out that the most important aspect of national policy is community building, so that the results of it can be preserved, and carried on. He said that we must work for strengthening our unity because the community is never a constant state, and if we do not work for it and move it forward, it will not remain in place but will fall behind.

“If we do not push forward for our common goal, the cause of Hungarians in Slovakia, and Slovak-Hungarian relations, then it will certainly regress,” commented Lőrinc Nacsa.

Leader of Magyar Szövetség/Hungarian Alliance Party (MSZ), László Gubík revealed at a joint round table discussion that he feels the challenges even more acutely. Slovak nationalism sometimes brought the community together, which is how the MSZ’ predecessor, the Party of the Hungarian Community (MKP) was formed in 1998. Today, however, internal competition poses a greater threat than the more subtle, barely perceptible anti-Hungarian sentiment. “The question is whether we have enough sincerity and intellectuality within us to be able to unite without these external influences,” he asked. He emphasized that the community’s self-esteem must be restored, reported ma7.sk.
