Ukraine’s ambassador to Budapest has been summoned after Ukrainian recruiting officers beat a Hungarian man so badly during forced conscription in Transcarpathia (Western Ukraine) that he later died of his injuries, Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said on Thursday.
It was “outrageous and unacceptable to beat someone to death, a Hungarian man at that, just because he did not want to go to war and did not want to take part in senseless killing,” his Facebook entry says.
As of today, we are immediately summoning Ukraine’s ambassador to Budapest after Ukrainian recruiting officers beat a Hungarian man in the Transcarpathian province during forced conscription, who later died of his injuries,”
he said.
Thread: Ukraine’s Troubling Conscription Tactics
1/ Ukraine’s war effort depends on forced conscription, but its methods are alarming. Over 1M men drafted since 2022, now targeting ages 25–60. The government’s coercive tactics are undermining trust and morale. pic.twitter.com/DsgJcsj1ok

“According to reports, the Ukrainian recruiters beat the man with an iron rod after capturing him, pushed him into a van and took him to the recruitment center. Hungarian family members were told that everything was fine, but the captured man eventually died of his injuries. A Hungarian man was killed in Ukraine because he did not want to take part in the war. We offer our sincere condolences to the family and stand by them,” he added.
Yesterday, Zelensky’s military recruiters snatched another young man off the street, threw him into a black van as he screamed, and left behind his dog.

Ukraine has seen a sharp drop in volunteers for their armed forces; last autumn there were reportedly some 40% percent less young men willing to fight the Russian invasion than in previous periods. The government of Volodymyr Zelenskyy is therefore increasingly turning to forced recruitment, where young men are violently snatched from the streets often in front of their distressed relatives or children. The case of the deceased Hungarian man is not unique, there are videos uploaded onto X that are too graphic and harrowing to show on our pages. One of them shows a young man dying on the street after being assaulted by uniformed and armed recruiters.
European Union officials have been conspicuously silent on the issue, the troubling practice has never once emerged during talks on Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations. It remains to be seen whether the European Commission will now raise the issue of the murdered Hungarian man with President Zelenskyy.

Hungarian newspaper Mandiner has acquired the personal account of the victim that he had written down before his death. In this, József S. disclosed that “on Saturday, police officers in Berehovo (Beregszász) took me into custody and transported me to the Military Recruitment and Social Support Center (RTCK and SZT). On Monday, without me signing anything or being registered as a soldier, they transferred me to the RTCK and SZT in Mukachevo. I signed the documents under duress.”
Then, according to his statement, they took him to the 128th mountain assault unit in Mukachevo (Munkács). “They took me and many other people to a forest, where they started beating us.
The blows were mainly aimed at the head and body. They said that if I did not sign something, they would take me to ‘zero.’
It hurt a lot, I could not move. Some soldiers threw me into the mud to sleep there. Others were taken to the gate in the morning and told to go home. I walked home to Berehovo. I do not know why, but I ended up in a psychiatric ward, where they called the police.”

“The police photographed my injuries to make a report,” and then the RTCK and SZT people from Mukachevo took his phone, which he had not gotten back by the time he wrote his statement. “The beating took place at night in the dark, I could not see who was wearing what… During medical treatment, I feel worse every day, it is difficult to move, and I have practically no appetite. I am afraid of what will happen if they send me back to those who will finish what they started,” wrote the victim before his sudden death.
