No proceedings will be initiated against participants in the banned Budapesti Büszkeség-Budapest Pride rally, the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) announced on Monday, citing legal uncertainties as the reason for its decision on the police website.

They wrote that on June 16, 2025, a private individual filed a notification to hold a march in Budapest on June 28. During its investigation, the BRFK contacted the Budapest Municipal Government, which has jurisdiction over the public space affected by the rally, and received a response stating that a municipal event would be held at the location and time in question.

The BRFK banned the event organized by the Budapest Metropolitan Municipality, called “Budapesti Büszkeség-Budapest Pride,” because it was reasonable to assume that it was intended to hold a rally prohibited by the law on assembly. In accordance with the law, the police forwarded the decision to the organizers, who were thus informed that the assembly was unlawful. As the organizers did not challenge the decision in court, it became final.

The organizers did not initiate any consultation with the authorities, and although they were aware of the ban, they continued to communicate to the contrary, calling people to the meeting and claiming that it was not illegal, they wrote.

The police added that the contradictory statements and the role of the local government could have caused uncertainty for many people regarding the legal interpretation, and people could have assumed that they were participating in the event in compliance with the rules in force.

“In view of the above, the police will not take any action against the participants,” the statement said.
