Viktor Orbán said that it was pointless for Brussels to claim that it would not take the results of the referendum into account. Hungary would not repeat the mistakes of the past by allowing itself to be drawn into two world wars due to German “influence.”
In an interview on Kossuth radio, the Prime Minister explained that while the Brussels elite may have an explanation for Ukraine’s accession, the people of Hungary have decided: “We do not support Ukraine’s EU membership,” Viktor Orbán emphasized, pointing out that the majority of people in most EU Member States are also against Ukraine’s accession.
The Prime Minister pointed out that Brussels wants to dictate to people who they should vote for, how they should live, and what stance they should take on important issues. Brussels has no right to do this, he said, calling it an abuse of power.
The European Union was not founded to exert pressure on the political opinions of the citizens of its Member States,”
he emphasized.
Orbán explained that the bureaucrats in Brussels believe that with the enormous amount of money, diplomatic influence, and media power at their disposal, and with the help of their representatives in individual countries—in this case, with the help of their governors in Hungary—they can bring about fundamental changes in a country’s domestic politics. Brussels makes no secret of the fact that it is pursuing its own interests in the parliamentary elections in individual Member States, he warned.
Referring to the meeting between Zelenskyy and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, in which the Ukrainian president called on Germany to put pressure on Hungary to agree to the 18th EU sanctions package, Orbán emphasized:
Everyone knows the story: Hungary has already been “persuaded” by the Germans twice, and as a result was involved in two world wars. Hungary will not allow itself to be influenced by the Germans again.
Everyone should mind their own business and leave Hungarian affairs to the Hungarians, the head of government said.
He emphasized that no top EU politician could give him a reason why, as the head of the Hungarian government, he should sacrifice the financial situation of his own people for Ukraine. Because of the sanctions, gas would cost Hungarian families three and a half times as much and electricity two and a half times as much as it does now.
I will not do that, I will veto it, I will stop it, I will fight against it,”
the Prime Minister declared. Quite apart from the fact, not a single package of sanctions has brought Russia to its knees to date.

In connection with the Pride march in Budapest, Orbán said he was surprised, because he believed that Pride as a social phenomenon had been overcome and did not pose a serious threat.
He made it clear that Hungary has a culture of peaceful dissent and that it is a big deal that such a demonstration took place without incident.
However, according to the head of government, it is not the size of the demonstration that is interesting, but the fact that the opposition parties had decided to unite at Pride and had made it their agenda to raise awareness among children again, even though three and a half million people had voted against it in the 2022 referendum.
We are not over it yet, and it is a real danger,”
said Orbán, stressing that there was still much to be done, as Pride seemed to be a much greater challenge than he had thought. ”Sensitizing children must not be allowed in kindergartens or schools,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
