The police have ordered an investigation into the organization of Saturday’s “Budapest Pride” event, Előd Novák, Vice President of the “Mi Hazánk” (Our Homeland) Party, announced on his Facebook page on Thursday, sharing the police statement.
“Based on my complaint against Gergely Karácsony and his accomplices, an investigation has been launched – the situation is clear, as this is a legally prohibited gathering,” wrote the opposition politician.
He emphasized that based on the Criminal Code, “anyone who organizes a prohibited gathering or calls for participation in it in accordance with the law on the right of assembly shall be punished with imprisonment of up to one year, unless another offense is committed.”
“It is a shame that Karácsony will probably avoid accountability just like former PM Gyurcsány did before…,” he added.
According to the attached statement, on suspicion of a criminal offense violating Section 217/C of the Criminal Code and classified as such, the police ordered an investigation pursuant to Section 375(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Be.), taking into account the provisions of paragraph 2, which began on June 30.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony has not yet responded to the investigation.
On June 28, despite lengthy debates, legal contradictions, tightened measures, and a police ban, the 30th Budapest Pride took place. Viktor Orbán stated on social media after the event: “In the referendum on child protection, Hungarians made a clear decision. We have decided on the laws accordingly.
We have informed everyone, everyone knows the legal provisions. The rest is up to the authorities; politics has no further role to play here.”
The Prime Minister hinted that the authorities could initiate proceedings and impose penalties on those who took part in Saturday’s demonstration.
