Dominik Szoboszlai Mourns Liverpool Teammate Diogo Jota in Heartfelt Farewell

Hungary Today 2025.07.04.

In a touching message, Dominik Szoboszlai bid farewell to his teammate, Portuguese national team player Diogo Jota, who died in a traffic accident on July 3. The 28-year-old athlete played for Liverpool FC, the same team as Hungarian players Dominik Szoboszlai, Milos Kerkez, and Ármin Pécsi.

“Words can not describe how heartbroken and devastated we are… Your smile, your love for the game will never be forgotten,” the Hungarian player shared his sorrow in a social media post, accompanying it with a joint photo.

We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, brother,”

he added.

Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, were involved in a fatal car accident in Spain. The brothers’ Lamborghini veered off the road, for reasons that are still unclear. The Spanish news agency EFE reported that one of the car’s tires may have burst while overtaking, causing the sports car to catch fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames, but the emergency services who arrived at the scene could only confirm the deaths of the two sportsmen.

Jota, who had married the mother of his three children just a week and a half ago, began his professional career at Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal, then played for Porto on loan from Atlético Madrid, and later for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had been playing for Liverpool since 2020, winning the FA Cup with the Reds in 2022, and reaching the Champions League final in the same year. He won the League Cup in 2024, and the English Premier League title with the team this year.

He made his debut for the Portuguese national team in 2019, which is in the same World Cup qualifying group as Hungary since September. Since then, he scored 14 goals in 49 appearances and celebrated two Nations League successes, and appeared in one World and two European Championships.
