The Danube Water Police Department of the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) warns of the dangers of low water levels on the Danube and calls for increased caution from swimmers, boaters, and those relaxing on the waterfront.
The police website stated that the low water level had significantly narrowed the main shipping route, leaving larger boats with little room to maneuver and small motorboats at risk of getting stuck on sandbanks and reefs.
They drew attention to the fact that when choosing speed and distance from the shore, it is important to take into account that waves can cause greater damage to moored boats at this time, and even greater emphasis must be placed on stable mooring.
Kayakers and SUP users may also be at risk, as there is less space available for traffic, they warned. The police pointed out that the Danube is unpredictable even under normal conditions and can be life-threatening outside designated bathing areas.
Due to the low water level, the riverbed has changed significantly: where there used to be deep water, there are now shallow areas, reefs, and underwater obstacles close to the surface.
They said jumping into the water is especially dangerous, noting that in places previously considered safe, there may now be rocks, metal, or driftwood just below the surface, causing serious, life-threatening injuries.
The police are asking everyone not to take risks: always be aware of local conditions, follow the rules for swimming and boating, and watch out for children, athletes, and fishermen, because the Danube is particularly unpredictable at the moment. “The power of nature should not be underestimated—especially that of the Danube,” the statement concludes.
