Prime Minister Viktor Orbán: Diplomats, Not Generals, Can End the War in Ukraine

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.07.03.

There is no solution to the war in Ukraine on the battlefield; the key to a solution lies in negotiations. We need diplomats, not generals, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on X on Wednesday.

The head of government shared his post by reposting an article from Euronews. Based on a report by the American news agency AP on Tuesday evening, the article stated that French President Emmanuel Macron had held a “substantial telephone conversation” with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday for the first time since September 2022.

He also recalled that a year ago, after a long journey, he had lengthy talks with President Zelenskyy about the possibility of a ceasefire and peace.

I warned him even then that time was not on his side. I told him that the Russians were preparing for a long war, that major changes were afoot in the US, and that Europe was running out of steam,”

the post reads.

Viktor Orbán wrote: “President Zelenskyy did not listen to us then. With the confidence of a stage actor, he insisted on continuing the war.”

“The war has been going on ever since, Europe is exhausted, and American arms deliveries have been declining. The Ukrainian people have been living through the horrors of war every day since then. This is not theater or a TV series. This is the harsh reality,” the Prime Minister said.

“Hungary has remained on the side of peace. It is not too late for President Zelenskyy to join us,” Orbán concluded his post.
