By the end of next year, MÁV’s passenger transport fleet will be expanded by a total of 100 modern locomotives, of which 30 have already arrived and 24 have been put into service, the CEO of the MÁV Group (Hungarian national railway company) said in a video posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday.
Zsolt Hegyi emphasized that there has not been such a significant expansion of the locomotive fleet at the MÁV Group since the 1980s.
Of the 100 vehicles, 60 are Siemens Vectron electric locomotives, which are two to four years old and are among the most modern and popular locomotives in Europe,”
he added.
According to his information, 12 Vectrons are currently operating on suburban services in Miskolc (northeastern Hungary) and Hidasnémeti (northeastern Hungary), on InterCity lines in Békéscsaba (southeastern Hungary), and will soon appear in the Sopron (northwestern Hungary) and Szombathely (western Hungary) areas. From August 1, Siemens vehicles will replace the previous traction vehicles at the head of the Balaton InterCity trains between Budapest and Keszthely (western shore of Lake Balaton, western Hungary).
The thirtieth locomotive arrived directly from the production line,”
he noted.
According to Hegyi, service reliability has improved noticeably on routes where the new vehicles are already in service. MÁV expects the more modern locomotives to improve the timetable reliability of rail transport.
