Report on Salt Mine Disaster in Romania to Name Those Responsible, Says RMDSZ Spokesperson

A ministerial report on the disaster in Praid (Parajd) will soon be published, naming those responsible, Botond Csoma told Maszol. The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) spokesperson believes that the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) would have used the parliamentary investigation committee to allow its politicians to riot in Praid for weeks, as they did elsewhere in Szeklerland.

On Wednesday, the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies rejected the proposal to set up a Parliamentary Committee to investigate the mining disaster in Praid. The RMDSZ abstained from voting. The establishment of the investigative committee was initiated by the extremist AUR and SOS Romania parties.

Regarding the rejection, RMDSZ spokesman Botond Csoma considered it important to emphasize that the government is already investigating the matter and that the relevant Ministry is preparing a report on the disaster in Praid and will name those responsible.

“Our experience with parliamentary investigative committees established in the past has been that they have never been able to reach a coherent conclusion, approaching the issue under investigation from a party political perspective. This committee was initiated by the AUR, and we know that this party does not want to solve the problem or help, but rather to stir up tension. It would have used this investigative committee for what it is very good at: AUR politicians would have rioted for weeks in Praid and the surrounding area, as they have done elsewhere in Szeklerland. We did not want to play their demagogic game,” said Botond Csoma.

The spokesperson could not give any specific details about the date of the ministry’s report on the Praid disaster, but he reiterated the RMDSZ’s position that the management of Salrom, the state-owned mining company, and the water authority are responsible for the situation and must therefore resign.

Expert opinions so far have shown that the disaster could have been prevented,”

he added. He emphasized that the RMDSZ joined the new coalition government in order to keep the Praid issue on the agenda.

Residents of Târnăveni (Dicsőszentmárton) have started collecting signatures asking the government to declare the town and its surroundings a disaster area. This would enable them to support businesses forced to suspend their activities due to the water shortage. The town has been without drinking water since June 2, and as a result, family doctors and dentists, as well as restaurants and beauty salons, have closed.

“We have not yet discussed this issue, but the initiative could be supported. It is a well-founded request, and if the legal conditions are met, it should be supported,” said the RMDSZ spokesperson.

Fact

As Hungary Today reported, at the end of May 2024, a major water infiltration incident occurred at the Praid (Parajd) salt mine in Romania’s Harghita County, leading to operational shutdowns and widespread environmental and infrastructure concerns. Harghita is a county with a significant ethnic Hungarian population, many of whom are employed in tourism and related services. With the mine closed and water shortages affecting nearby towns, local livelihoods—particularly those dependent on tourism—have been at serious risk.
