The Hungarian Government is providing $25,000 in emergency humanitarian aid through the Hungary Helps Program to assist Christians attacked in Nigeria’s Benue State, announced the State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians on Thursday, on the third day of the Hungary Helps mission to Kenya.
Tristan Azbej said in a video posted on his social media page: “In Benue State, Nigeria, Christian internally displaced persons, people who had already fled violence, were attacked in the Makurdi Catholic diocese.” They were attacked by an extremist terrorist group. “Since then, we have been receiving increasingly horrific news, learning that
over 200 people have been slaughtered with cruel brutality. They tried to survive the next period in internal refugee camps, retreating to churches, but even so, they could not escape the attack, during which children, women, and men were indiscriminately killed with machetes and other weapons,”
said the State Secretary.
Azbej believes there are two important things we must do in response to this “tragic and not unique event.” First, we must acknowledge and make it known to the world that Christians are being persecuted in many countries around the world, he explained.
Last year, over 4,000 Christians were murdered in Nigeria, a fact that is denied by many aid organizations and Western governments, he pointed out.
This denial must end. The Hungarian Government stands with persecuted Christians and demands that the international community protect Christian lives and human dignity. We want to set a good example in helping Christian people,”
he said.

The State Secretary also spoke about the ongoing Hungary Helps mission in Kenya: With regard to Kenya, as with Africa, the government’s position is that aid should be taken to where the problem is, rather than bringing the problem to Europe through migration. “That is why we are now visiting the locations where we are supporting people living in poverty through the Hungary Helps Program.
For instance, in the slums of the Kenyan capital, with the support of Christian missions, we are providing education for people and children in very difficult situations, as well as establishing facilities that provide clean drinking water. This is so that Kenyans, even those in rural areas, can find a future in their own country and not head for Europe,”
he said.
He added that they also support agricultural development programs, which have been successful.
“We have managed to improve very difficult situations, save the lives of people in danger, and contribute to Kenyan youth planning their future in their own country,” said the State Secretary.
