Hungary Begins Evacuation of Its Citizens from Iran and Israel

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.06.17.

In view of the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East, Hungary has launched several complex evacuation operations to bring its citizens to safety, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced on Monday in Budapest.

Péter Szijjártó reported that the situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly serious, with Iran and Israel now attacking not only each other’s capitals but also several other locations. “This increases the number of Hungarians who may be in danger,” he pointed out.

Since both Iran and Israel’s airspace is closed, evacuation operations are now a little more complex and complicated than usual, the politician added. The Hungarian Government is carrying out evacuation operations in several Middle Eastern countries, largely on its own, but also partly in cooperation with Slovakia, he said.

The first successful evacuation was achieved on Monday evening.

The evacuation flight left the Jordanian airspace with seven Hungarian citizens on board who have escaped the conflict zone in the Middle East,

the Foreign Minister announced late Monday evening on Facebook.

The Minister wrote that the seven citizens will soon arrive in Cyprus, where Hungarian consuls are already waiting for them, and then they will continue on to Bratislava on Tuesday.

In his post, Szijjártó thanked “our Slovak friends” for their cooperation, adding: “This is not our first joint evacuation operation; we have always been able to count on each other, and this will not change in the future.”

The Minister said that

further operations are being organized and implemented, and that he is confident that they will soon have more good news to report.

He added that the widening of the conflict zone is increasing the number of Hungarian citizens who may be in danger in the region, with more and more of them asking for help in returning home.
