Róbert Jankovics was re-elected President of the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Croatia (HMDK) at the general meeting held in Zmajevac (Vörösmart), Croatia, on Saturday.

Delegates from HMDK member organizations elected the executive president, the national presidency, and the various organizational committees. Mr. Jankovics expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him, calling the role a great honor.

Speaking to MTI, he emphasized that the HMDK has only had three presidents in its 32-year history, and he is now beginning his third four-year term as the head of the national organization.

The progress our community has achieved in recent years is due to the dedicated work of HMDK’s leadership and members. We plan to continue working with modesty and deep humility during the next term as well,”

emphasized the reelected president, who has also been a member of parliament representing the Hungarian minority since 2016.

Founded in 1993, in Zagreb, the HMDK plays a key role in preserving the Hungarian identity in Croatia through education, media, and community initiatives.

Fact

Hungarians are a recognized ethnic minority in Croatia. According to the 2011 census, there are 14,048 people of Hungarian ethnicity living in Croatia. The HMDK represents the cultural, educational, public, economic, health, social, and environmental interests of the local Hungarian community. Its aim is to preserve and develop the national identity of Hungarians in Croatia and to maintain and nurture the Hungarian mother tongue. To promote the latter, the organization publishes a weekly newspaper and a magazine, as well as engaging in other publishing activities. It considers the operation and development of kindergartens and schools teaching in the mother tongue to be of paramount importance.
