Between June 6 and 24, 2025, Hungary is playing a central role in the international military exercise Saber Guardian 2025. Around 800 Hungarian soldiers are taking part in this large-scale exercise that is part of the comprehensive DEFENDER 25 exercise series organized by the U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The Hungarian Ministry of Defense has revealed the details of the cooperation.
An essential component of Saber Guardian 2025 is the intensive military cooperation between Hungary and the United States. Hungarian troops are training side by side with approximately 1,400 U.S. soldiers to refine their skills in joint operations. The Spanish armed forces have also deployed approximately 450 soldiers, further strengthening unity and operational coordination within the NATO alliance.
The Hungarian Defense Forces’ Joint Operations Command is leading the Hungarian operations, acting as the division command for the duration of the exercise. The Hungarian contingent brings a wide range of modern capabilities to the table: from self-propelled artillery and chemical defense, mechanized infantry and anti-tank units, to anti-aircraft missiles, helicopters, and reconnaissance units.
The joint exercises include complex maneuvers and also involve live-fire exercises at night and in the early morning hours to test operational readiness under realistic conditions.
The main objective of Saber Guardian 2025 is to improve the ability of NATO allies – in particular the Hungarian and American armed forces – to respond more effectively and in a more coordinated manner to current and future security challenges.
Strengthening Hungarian-American military cooperation not only serves to protect Hungary, but also contributes to the security of the entire alliance system, reads the Ministry’s statement.
The increased military presence is noticeable on the roads of Hungary. Honvedelem.hu pointed out over the weekend that increased vehicle traffic is to be expected in the Pápa region and the Bakony Mountains as American and Spanish soldiers and their equipment continue to arrive. In a statement, the Pápa military airbase highlighted, informing the public, that intense noise from helicopters can be expected in the coming days, both during the day and at night.
On Wednesday, the portal reported that Spanish convoys had reached the base of the Hungarian Defense Forces’ ‘Böszörményi Géza’ military training area command in Újmajor via the Croatian port of Zadar. This base, also known as Camp Croft, will be home to the Spanish contingent, consisting of units from the Spanish Legion, the 11th Cavalry Regiment, and the 1st Signal Battalion. Together with their American and Hungarian comrades, they will demonstrate their preparedness at the Saber Guardian 2025 exercise.
