Socialist Leader Takes Issue with European Commission’s Absence at Budapest Pride

Yesterday, opposition leader Klára Dobrev posted her open letter to Ursula von der Leyen, in which she urged the head of the European Commission to stand with LGBTQI+ rights in Hungary.

“I was surprised and deeply disappointed to learn that, according to reports, your office has asked members of the European Commission not to travel to the Budapest Pride event this year,” Klára Dobrev begins her open letter to Ursula von der Leyen. According to the Democratic Coalition (DK) leader, the request was justified on the grounds that

their participation would be a “provocation” against the Orbán government, which could be counterproductive.

“I do not need to remind you that the European Commission is the guardian of the Treaties. As such, it is its duty to protect the fundamental rights of its citizens as enshrined in the Treaties. These include, in particular, human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, human rights – including the protection of the rights of persons belonging to minorities, non-discrimination, tolerance, and solidarity. Consequently, actively standing up for the Hungarian LMBTQI+ community is also the unavoidable duty of the European Commission and of you personally,” reads the letter posted on Klára Dobrev’s Facebook page.

In response, Ursula von der Leyen denied the allegations, claiming she did not instruct her commissioners to refrain from attending. However, Dobrev remains skeptical and suggested that the real test will be whether the commissioners actually attend the event. “We look forward to seeing them in Budapest!” she concluded her latest Facebook post.
