Semmelweis University is one of the best medical universities in the world with the greatest tradition, a jewel of the Hungarian higher education, the Minister of Culture and Innovation said on Monday at the inauguration of the renewed teaching rooms of the Department of Propaedeutics at the Faculty of Dentistry.
Balázs Hankó said that the 250 years of the university’s existence mean more than 100,000 degrees. During these 250 years, the university has developed many new procedures, from anesthesia to organ transplantation, he added. A combination of medicine, education, and research is carried out at the institution, and
we are proud to say that Semmelweis University is in the top one percent of universities in the world, ranking around 250th out of 30,000 universities,”
he said.
He said that in recent years, the internationalization of the university – where a third of students are foreign students – and its ability to attract research and industrial revenue have increased dramatically, and it has educational-research links with 200 international institutions.
“We can be proud of Semmelweis University, that is one of the jewels of the renewed Hungarian higher education,” the Minister said, adding that
its innovation revenues have doubled in recent years, reaching 1.6 billion forints (3.9 million euros), an increase by two and a half times.
Hankó believes that we should be happy for the success of Hungarian higher education and commit ourselves to the fact that by 2030, “whatever the headwinds from Brussels,” there will be Hungarian universities among the world’s top 100. “And, let Semmelweis University be among the top 100 universities in the world,” he added.

The rector of Semmelweis University, Béla Merkely, said that the Faculty of Dentistry had taken possession of a fully equipped teaching and patient care building in 2007. However, improvements and modernization were always needed to keep pace with the dynamic development of the dental profession, he added.
He pointed out that the Times Higher Education rankings put the university in the top one percent, but the other rankings were also fairly consistent, with the university in the 200th and 300th places in medicine and dentistry, respectively.
The investment, launched in 2024, with a budget of nearly three billion forints (7.4 million euros) and has just been inaugurated, will start a new chapter in the history of the Faculty of Dentistry’s educational center,
he stressed.
Two skill labs have been completely renovated and a brand new lab has been built, doubling the number of practice places. In addition, a 30-seat digital laboratory to support the teaching of the basic course in “digital dentistry” has also been handed over.

The rector stressed that the new investment is worthy of the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Dentistry this year and the outstanding achievements of its staff. “This development will further strengthen practice-oriented education and create new opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate training across the country,” he noted.
