Government Targets Pharmaceuticals in Latest Fight against High Prices

Hungary Today 2025.05.22.

The Minister for National Economy shared a post on his Facebook page highlighting the fact that the price of unsubsidized medicine has risen lately. His message could indicate that the government is ready to intervene in this sector as well to fight against the high prices.

“The numbers speak for themselves! Inflation for unsubsidized drugs is still around ten percent,” Minister Márton Nagy wrote in his post, showcasing a chart as well.

On Wednesday, the Minister spoke about the 2026 budget in parliament, announcing that talks had been opened to lower the prices of unsubsidized drugs.

In the spring, the government held talks with several service providers about reducing prices. As a result, banks, insurance companies, and telecoms service providers all agreed to limit or freeze their current tariffs. The latest step was on behalf of insurance companies, who have announced voluntary fee restrictions one after another in May. The Ministry of National Economy stated that like banks, the Hungarian insurance sector is on stable footing, which allows for a reduction in home insurance premiums, while insurance amounts will continue to follow the increase in property values in order to avoid underinsurance. As a result, despite the premium reduction, there will be no deterioration in the quality of services provided.
