The Brussels plan for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union does not help in any way to alleviate the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, but could ruin the European Union’s economy, said the State Secretary responsible for programs to help persecuted Christians at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Brussels on Tuesday.

Speaking to Hungarian journalists during a break in the European Humanitarian Forum, Tristan Azbej pointed out that Brussels would remedy the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine by implementing its dangerous and harmful plan for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. He said that if the EU’s plan to grant Ukraine EU membership were to be implemented, Hungary would face dangers from which the country must be protected.

It is time to renew the European Union’s humanitarian policy. This is particularly necessary because in recent years, when humanitarian crises have arisen near the European continent or in the European Union’s neighborhood, the European Union and Brussels have usually responded poorly,”

he said.

The State Secretary said that during the Middle East crisis, which reached its peak in 2014, the European Union tried to remedy the humanitarian problem through migration, “choosing the wrong and harmful path,” instead of encouraging and supporting people to stay where they were. Instead of resolving the crisis, Brussels supported its spread and importation into Europe, he pointed out.

“In the current situation, in an era of poor geopolitical responses, it is very important that we steer the European Union’s humanitarian policy in a direction that effectively addresses, through local assistance, those crisis situations that cause human suffering on the one hand and pose a security risk to the entire European continent on the other,”

he underlined.

The Hungarian position is represented by the model implemented through the Hungary Helps humanitarian and development aid program, which is now in its seventh year: instead of bringing problems to Europe, aid must be taken to where the trouble is. Help should not be provided through international organizations with opaque backgrounds and operations that are not sufficiently effective, but should be delivered directly to where it is needed, in line with local needs and local emergencies, Tristan Azbej explained.

The politician said that Hungary, taking into account its capacity, is doing its part in direct humanitarian aid in a very respectable manner. It is continuing its humanitarian programs in both the Middle East and Africa.

Over the past seven years, the government has provided assistance to humanitarian crisis areas in more than 50 countries through the Hungary Helps Program, making the situation of more than two million people more bearable and preventing them from choosing migration instead of staying in their homes.

Wherever people are persecuted because of their religion, whether Christian or other religious beliefs, they must be given help. Where all other humanitarian actors have become powerless or have failed, humanitarian aid must and should be provided through Christian organizations, whether in the Middle East or Africa, added the State Secretary.
