Italian food company Kométa has announced a major expansion of its site in Kaposvár, in southwestern Hungary. As the mayor of the town, Károly Szita, revealed on his social media page, major investments are to be made that could make Kométa one of the leading meat processing companies in Europe within a few years.
As part of the plans, Kométa will relocate its logistics center from Budapest to Kaposvár and build an impressive, 30-meter-high, fully automated warehouse there. Managing Director Giacomo Pedranzini emphasized the company’s continuous desire to expand: “What we do is never, ever enough for us, and we always want to do more.”
The investments also include the introduction of a new IT system from June, and the installation of a gas engine generator.
The overall project should be completed by 2030.
At a meeting, Giacomo Pedranzini presented the location of the first construction phase to the mayor of the city. Károly Szita was optimistic that Kométa will play a key role in the European meat industry by the end of the decade.
Kométa 99 Zrt. is majority-owned by the Italian Pedranzini and Ruffini families, Világgazdaság noted. Managing Director Giacomo Pedranzini has lived in Hungary for many years. In 2021, the Hungarian state-owned MFB Invest Zrt. and the Croatian Zito Group expanded the shareholder base as minority shareholders. A joint capital increase of 5.1 billion forints (12.7 million euros) has been carried out, but control of the company remained with the Italian owners.
The plant expansion underlines the potential of the Kaposvár site for European food production, and is in line with the government’s recently announced plans to boost the industrial recovery with 150 new factories in Hungary.
