This Year’s “Ice Cream of Balaton” Flavor Revealed

The professional jury awarded the title of “Ice Cream of Balaton” 2025 to the goat cheese creation of Füge Ice Cream Parlor and Café in Veszprém (western Hungary). The winning flavor was selected by the jury from 31 compositions by 17 ice cream parlors and confectioners in the middle of the lake, Világgazdaság reported.

The 12th Ice Cream of Balaton 2025 competition has come to an end. As in previous years, the judging took place in the middle of Lake Balaton on May 9, this time on one of the new ferries operated by Balaton Shipping Company. The event was surrounded by the usual heightened interest.

The winner is the goat cheese creation from Füge Ice Cream Parlor and Café in Veszprém. The ice cream, named “Mekkóstollak” (a wordplay with the sound the goat makes and the word “tasting” in Hungarian), is made with goat cheese, and roasted and salted almonds.

The competition is not only a contest that is growing in popularity every year, but also a celebration of high-quality artisanal ice cream.

The aim of the event is to recognize the high-quality work of ice cream makers, draw attention to local ingredients and creative flavor combinations, and further strengthen the gastronomic appeal of Lake Balaton,

said Tamás Fekete, president of the Balaton Tourism Association.

A jury of renowned pastry chefs and gastronomic experts evaluates the ice creams entered in the competition based on taste, texture, appearance, and innovation, and also takes into account whether regional ingredients are used in the preparation of the delicacies.

Experience shows that the winning ice cream becomes one of the most sought-after desserts of the summer season on the shores of Lake Balaton.

Over the past 12 years, it has become clear that the Ice Cream of Balaton competition is a step forward for local businesses and the local economy.

This year, 17 ice cream parlors and pastry shops entered 31 ice cream creations in the competition. Special prizes were awarded to the Bagaméri Ice Cream Parlor in Balatonfüred, the Pingvin Ice Cream Parlor and Confectionery in Balatonmáriafürdő, and the Margaréta Ice Cream Parlor in Balatonszemes.

The organizers will make the recipe for the winning flavor available to everyone, so that any confectionery or ice cream shop in the Balaton region can make it, thereby increasing the popularity of the region’s classic, traditional, high-quality artisanal ice creams.
