Pál Nagy’s Impact on Transylvanian Art Honored in New Exhibition

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.04.07.

The exhibition opening Friday at the Kunsthalle Budapest (Műcsarnok) offers insight into the experimental art of Transylvania in the 1980s and 1990s through the works of 27 artists and their mentor, a visual artist and art educator from Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely, Romania), Pál Nagy’s art pedagogy methods.

The exhibition titled “Experimentum. Pál Nagy and his students” is the first in Hungary to present the work of the art teacher from the Târgu Mureș Art High School, aiming to explore his significance in art pedagogy as well.

They recalled that in the 1980s, under the totalitarian Ceaușescu regime and its official ideology, a group of young Hungarian artists in Transylvania emerged who embraced experimental artistic approaches recognized in Western art at the time. Artistically, this group foreshadowed the regime change. Pál Nagy’s work in art education had a significant impact on the generation of young artists who ushered in a new era in Transylvanian art.

Despite oppression and social restrictions, the Hungarian artists linked to Nagy’s creative workshop sought new forms of free expression and artistic discourse in the spirit of their mentor’s vision.

The exhibition includes not only experimental graphic and painting works but also photo documentation of actions and performances, experimental photography, mail art, video, animation, and installations.

Pál Nagy died under still unclear circumstances in a car accident with his wife on June 19, 1979.

His career reflects a practice in which autonomous artistic activity is inseparably intertwined with the responsibilities of art education.

The exhibition, open until June 15 and curated by Gréta Garami, pays tribute to his personality and values alongside the works of his students.
