Hamas Wants Hungary to Rejoin ICC, German FM Also Criticizes Netanyahu Visit

Hungary Today 2025.04.04.

Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist organization, has issued a strong condemnation of Hungary’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), calling on the Hungarian government to immediately rejoin and arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is in Budapest, Hirado.hu reports.

The Hungarian government announced its withdrawal from the ICC during Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Budapest. On Thursday, Viktor Orbán held a joint press conference with the Israeli Prime Minister at the Carmelite monastery. Mr. Orbán stressed that

Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC was necessary, because the institution had been transformed into a political court.

Hamas condemned the Hungarian government’s move in a statement on Thursday, Turkish news site Anadolu Ajansi reported. “We consider this decision an immoral position that represents blatant complicity with a war criminal on the run from international justice, and a flagrant violation of international law and the principles of human justice,” the Palestinian terrorist organization stated.

Hungary’s decision constitutes a slap in the face of international justice and embodies the policy of double standards pursued by some Western governments, most notably Hungary and the US, which undermines the international judicial system, encourages impunity, and represents a direct threat to global peace and stability.”

Hamas urged the Hungarian government to “immediately rescind this biased and shameful decision, fulfill its legal obligations, and hand over the war criminal Netanyahu to the ICC to hold him accountable for his crimes and receive just punishment for the massacres and genocide he committed against our Palestinian people.”

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry also condemned Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Budapest, also calling on the government to hand over the Israeli Prime Minister to the authorities. They said that by inviting Netanyahu, Hungary “flouts international law and encourages Israel and its government to continue their criminal activities.”

Furthermore, on Thursday, several international NGOs, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, called on Hungary to hand over Netanyahu to the International Criminal Court.

Incidentally, the German Foreign Minister seems to agree with the Palestinian terrorist organization.

Annalena Baerbock said at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers that “this is a bad day for international criminal law,” reacting to the Israeli Prime Minister’s visit in Budapest,

The Times of Israel reported.

Fact

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu last November for “war crimes” in Gaza. Alongside the Israeli Prime Minister, the court also accused Hamas leader Mohammed Deif of genocide and other war crimes. The arrest warrant has sparked a polarized response, highlighting divisions within the international community over Israel’s actions in its conflict with Hamas.

Countries were divided on the ICC warrant for Mr. Netanyahu. The U.S. called the charges “outrageous,” while Germany supported the ICC but criticized equating Israeli leaders with Hamas, and pledged not to follow through with an arrest.
