Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has arrived in the Hungarian capital for a multi-day visit to hold talks with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán. At a press conference after their meeting on Thursday, both leaders emphasized the close relations between their countries.
Under Viktor Orbán’s leadership, Hungary has done “fantastic things” for Israel and the Jewish people, Benjamin Netanyahu said at the press event, praising in particular Hungary’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC). He stressed Hungary’s support for Israel, its “proud and unwavering” stand in the European Union and the United Nations, and its “courageous and significant step” in the ICC. “Thank you very much, Viktor, this is important not only for us, but for all democracies,” he told the Hungarian Prime Minister.

Speaking about the ICC, he added that it is particularly important to stand up against the “corrupt organization,” that is a virtual threat to democracy. Terrorism is a threat to democracy, and the ICC stands up against Israel, not against its “torturers,” he said.
The Israeli politician also noted that
Hungary had been “very brave” in the face of anti-Semitism, which he said had re-emerged in Europe.
“You do not tolerate, and recognize that the driving force of anti-Semitism is anti-Zionism,” he said. “There are those who claim that anyone who is against the state of Israel is not anti-Semitic. It is like saying that I have no problem with Hungarians, as long as Hungary does not exist,” he explained.
Mr. Netanyahu is convinced that “we are fighting a similar battle for the future of our common civilization, for Judeo-Christian, Western civilization.” He said that this civilization is currently under attack from radical Islam, supported by a single state in the Middle East, Iran, as a “driving force.” We are crushing this Iranian terror axis, which has been attacking not only us but also Europe, he said, stressing that the Hungarian Prime Minister understood that this was “a joint effort in the interest of our values, our interests, and our common security.”
He said that Hungary receives a lot of Israeli tourists and investments, and that there is also strong technological and defense cooperation, adding that
they will continue to review the spheres in which cooperation between the two states can be expanded in the future.

Orbán recalled that the last time they met in Budapest was eight years ago, and the last time he himself visited Israel was in 2021. He said that “the world has changed enormously since then, the whole of global security is facing serious threats, and one of the most serious examples and events was the terrorist attack that Israel suffered a year and a half ago.”
He stressed that Hungary made it clear from the very first moment that it stood up for Israel’s sovereignty, its right to self-defense, and the security of the Israeli people, and has since then maintained this position in all areas of world politics.
Mr. Orbán also emphasized that Hungary will not agree to any deals regarding illegal migration, as it is a matter of national sovereignty. He pointed out that
illegal migration is endangering Jewish communities across Western Europe and fueling the rise of anti-Semitism.”

Regarding Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC, he said that
a democratic state of the rule of law with any self-esteem such as Hungary cannot take part in an international court operating on the basis of political motivations.”
The Prime Minister believes that the body has become a political court in recent years and is no longer an impartial court based on the rule of law. “This was most clearly demonstrated by the decisions on Israel,” he added, while his statement was applauded by Mr. Netanyahu. “I am convinced that this otherwise important international judicial forum has been turned into a political instrument, with which we cannot and do not want to be in communion in the coming period,” he underlined.
Mr. Orbán added that Hungary is interested in Israel remaining a stable and secure country because of its own values and national interests. He stressed that a stable Israel is the key to stability in the Middle East.
