The brand-new L-39 Skyfox jet-powered trainer aircraft of the Hungarian Defense Forces will soon arrive in Kecskemét (south of Budapest), reported Világgazdaság.
The Hungarian Air Force was supposed to receive the first four aircraft – initially developed under the name L-39NG, now renamed Skyfox (“Sky Fox”) – in the second half of 2024. However,
Hungary, by mutual agreement, left the initial operation of the first two aircraft (serial numbers 7017 and 7018) to the Czech company LOM Praha, where Hungarian pilot training began.
This modification allowed sufficient time to prepare the Kecskemét airbase for the reception and operation of the aircraft. Magyar Nemzet reported in March 2022, that Hungary ordered a total of twelve new L-39NG trainer aircraft for its air force. Eight of these aircraft will be used as NATO-standard combat trainers, represented by the L-39NG.T1 variant.
A reconnaissance version of the L-39NG is also under development for the Hungarian Air Force. The integration of an EO/IR (electro-optical and infrared) system for identifying and tracking stationary and moving ground objects is planned as part of a joint Czech-Hungarian research and development project. Magyar Nemzet also wrote that this version also has the capabilities of the Light Attack version, and is therefore capable of using the basic range of air-to-ground weapons – bombs and rockets – both guided and unguided.
