Utility Cost Reduction Scheme Lands Hungary at Top of Statistics

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.04.02.

Slovak families pay nearly two and a half times the Hungarian gas prices and more than twice (2.2 times) Hungarian electricity prices. Bills confirm that the utility cost reduction scheme is indeed working, announced the Government Commissioner for the Maintenance of Utility Cost Reduction, in a video shared on his Facebook page on Monday.

Szilárd Németh stated that he traveled to Slovakia to gather information about local household energy prices, utility costs, gas, and electricity prices. “We have found that it remains true that we Hungarians pay the lowest utility costs,” he stated.

He continued by saying that

despite the Slovak government’s efforts, it still falls short of what the Hungarian government has achieved with its utility cost reduction scheme.

Over the past year and a half, Slovakia has taken many measures, including introducing a price cap that provided approximately a 34% benefit for Slovak citizens.

The video features Péter Pandy, President of the National Council of the Hungarian Alliance, who stated that

gas is the cheapest in Hungary, with Slovakia ranking fourth in this regard, while Sweden has the most expensive gas prices.

Gábor Mihók, Regional Representative of the Central European Economic Development Network (CED) in Košice, mentioned in the video that more than 60% of Slovakia’s electricity supply comes from nuclear power plants.

Németh also posted about his visit to Slovakia. Besides Péter Pandy and Gábor Mihók, he also met Dr. Ágota Hetey, Consul General to talk about the gas and energy situation.
